Trying to explain to your closest relatives or friends what Kallmann's syndrome is and why you need to have all these injections can be awkward. Although they may be sympathetic, they may find it difficult to empathise with you. It can be unreasonable to expect somebody who has never had Kallmann's syndrome to understand how traumatic and unsettling it can be, especially when others are going through puberty and you feel left behind.
Perhaps it is best to start off by explaining that the disease had its origins before you were born and that there was nothing that anybody could have done about it. Then explain why your brain is not able to tell your body to make the hormones you need to develop normally and why you cannot smell. It may help to talk about the kinds of treatment you are having. You do not have to tell people that you have a hormonal disorder and although it can be a little embarrassing at first, talking about the disease with others helps many sufferers come to terms with Kallmann's syndrome.
